What is digital marketing?

We’ve received a bunch of questions in our time about Digital Marketing, so we decided to put together a list of the most common Digital Marketing FAQ’s and their answers.

What is digital marketing?

Digital marketing is the communication of marketing messages through digital means via the internet through desktop and mobile devices on platforms like social media, search engines, emails etc to reach consumers.

What is a digital marketing strategy?

A digital marketing strategy is a roadmap, laying out the plan for your business to achieve on its’ goals and objectives, channel by channel.

A digital marketing strategy audits your current situation or how you are placed digitally. Consisting of a SWOT Analysis, Market Position (Seven P’s)

Breaking up your overarching plan for success into goals – representing the intangible bigger picture. Whilst business goals are broad, objectives are much more specific are clear and actionable, and step out the approaches toward the achieveing business goals.

For each objective a strategic approach is developed to put into place a workable plan. Primarily, the strategic focus is upon outlining the key ideas that will help to meet each specific objective.

And following, tactical recommendations take into consideration which channels to use, what content is appropriate, distribution and timeframes, and any other factors which may impact upon the effectiveness of the plan.

Marketing programs can often appear overly broad and made up of too many unknowns. Controls set out a plan for implementation which is critical to being able to deliver a workable and staged approach to maximise results.

How long does a digital strategy take?

Feed’s digital strategies typically take between 20-50 hours to complete depending on the level of intricacy of the business, target markets and strategies required to reach these markets. A digital strategy requires multiple meetings, however most of the strategy is completed off site by Feed’s strategists.

What do you receive at the end of a digital strategy?

In essence it’s a lengthy document, but it’s so much more. It’s a plan for success. It gives reason and purpose to your business, to your lead generation strategy. It provides value to your customers and helps you to define what’s important to them. It assists you in crafting a story, building channel specific narratives which help you to deliver on your business goals.

What is a digital marketing campaign?

A digital marketing campaign is the completion of a marketing initiative online, end to end. A campaign is the creation, implementation and execution of a channel strategy developed in a digital marketing strategy, set to deliver on business goals.  

What happens after a digital marketing strategy is complete?

We begin work implementing it.

Often there is some infrastructure that needs to be setup before work on the channel specific strategies can commence. Once those tasks are completed, we can make the magic happen.

What does it cost to implement a digital strategy?

That depends on what work needs to be carried out. If you need a website – costs will vary substantially and no two websites will cost the same, that will depend on functionality required.

However, once the strategy is complete Feed will give you an allocation of time it will take to implement so you are aware of the costs involved before we start. Often, it’s a good idea to have an understanding of what you can afford to spend on marketing so that we can develop strategies that stay within your limit.

How long does it take for a digital strategy to take effect?

That’s a tricky one….. how long is a piece of string?

It depends on home much work needs to be done in setup as-well-as recourses available to the business in both, time, budget and skill.

Typically, a start-up with no marketing collateral can expect to see results in 6-12 months, a business with channels established but no previous plan can expect to see results in 4-8 months and a business with a mature place in the market can expect to see results in 3-6 months.
